In a bid to address the escalating drug abuse crisis in Nigeria, the Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, has made a compelling call for governments at all levels to introduce new legislation mandating drug tests for anyone seeking public office.
Speaking at a thought-provoking symposium on drug abuse and moral decay held at the esteemed Northwest University, the emir underscored the urgency of combating drug abuse, particularly concerning substances like zakami, gadagi, and Tramol.
The emir expressed deep concern over the alarming prevalence of drug abuse cases involving public office holders, urging swift action to curb this alarming trend.
“Governments at all levels should enact new laws against drug abuse and subject anyone vying for public office to mandatory drug tests,” emphasized the emir during his impassioned speech.
In a separate meeting with the newly introduced Sector Commander of Kano State for the Federal Road Safety Commission, Ibrahim Sallau Abdullahi, the emir emphasized the need to bolster road safety in the Kano metropolis. He urged for an immediate deployment of more personnel to curb reckless driving and safeguard lives and properties.
The emir’s stance comes at a crucial time when the nation grapples with the escalating challenges of drug abuse and reckless driving. His calls for stringent measures on drug testing for public office aspirants could serve as a critical step towards fostering responsible leadership and curbing the devastating impact of drug abuse on society.
